Mancat Monday

The panthers have had a fun weekend.  Everyone is adjusting a bit better to Chad being around.
Chad is playing hard and learning new things.  He is entering the crab jump phase and it is super cute!  He loves this S Scratcher and plays on it most when he is out and about.

Some were wondering if he will be a foster fail, and the answer is no.  He has an adopter who will take him once he is neutered and old enough to go.  I'm working with a friend now, who is the cat medical coordinator for a rescue to see if we can run him through her group to keep cost down.

He weighs 1 pound 11 ounces and is ready to start vaccines this week.  He is a sweet baby for sure!

The panthers are jealous but surviving.  They are still getting their nightly treats.

Flynn is looking over some Department 56 stuff we are trying to sell.

Rusty came by to look too.  Make sure we don't get rid of your favorite pieces buddy.

Rusty is getting braver and braver about being near the baby...he wants to interact, just isn't quite sure what to do.

Rusty and Flynn finding comfort in each other.

Rusty and Cousin Lenny checking out the pumpkins at the hotel

Rusty ready to swat the baby if he comes too close...Seeing Rusty with the baby has made me realize how much he looks like Tanner.  I've called him Tan more times that I can count this weekend!  He may look like Tan, but he isn't a loving, nurturing momma cat like he was.

Harrison loves the pumpkins and tries to take bites out of them.

Sleepy kitten...he loves the ripple rug as well.

Rusty has brought his teal rabbit over to show the baby how he plays.

Rusty and Cousin George just hanging out.  Being up high means the baby can't get you!

Sweet sleeping baby in his bed.  We leave the cage door unlocked so he comes out when he wakes up during the day.  He sleeps better in his bed that he does being held.  He normally plays for about an hour and then needs a nap.  He will nap for a couple of hours usually and then ready for a potty break, snack and another hour of play before back in the bed for another nap.  Such a hard life.

Here are a couple of short videos of him playing...

What's going on Wednesday?

Another week, another round of exciting changes in the house...
What has captured the attention of Rusty and Harrison?

It's Chad!  He is a new foster baby and has upset the entire house!

How anyone can be scared of this sweet little thing is beyond me.

Chad was found by a friend of a friend and we ended up with him after his first foster home became extremely allergic to him.  She knew she had allergies, but thought it would be ok.  Nope, less than a week and she is a swollen, stuffy apple head.

Flynn is trying to play with the baby, but bopping him on the head isn't very nice and sends the baby rolling!

Chad seemed "off" to us, so we took him to the vet yesterday and found out that he is visually impaired.  He has an appointment with the eye doctor in a couple of weeks to determine how impaired he really is.  I believe he can see some, but you can tell he compensates well with his hearing.

He will remain with us until his appointment and we know more about his condition.  Fingers crossed that the potential home will work out for him.

Mancat Monday

The boys have had a nice week.  We started decorating for Halloween, and so that meant a new cardboard house for the boys..
This is a Haunted Hotel, and Rusty was eager to help...

The hotel was two levels and Rusty enjoyed both...

You have to watch out because the hotel will attack you!

Looking for prey

All of the boys have ventured into the hotel, but I need to get better photos.  The panthers don't show up as well as Rusty :)

Last Monday we had the slab poured for the porch...here is the finished product, still drying.
After a few days, Flynn went out to inspect...he approves!

After two long weekend days of work, we now have this in the back yard...another round of inspections is due before more work can be done.

The boys are not sure what all the noise is, but they are getting used to it.  Harrison finally came downstairs while the men were working on Sunday and sat at the door and watched.  They will forget all the inconveniences and missed naps once the porch is finished!

Happy Birthday Oliver

Happy Birthday at the Bridge Oliver.  I know you are enjoying your time with Tanner.  We think of you often and have loved the signs you have sent.  I miss my snuggle buddy and bed fella...try to encourage your brothers to step up their snuggling!  Love you always.

We received word from the necropsy report and Oliver had hemangiosarcoma, just like Devon.  Supposedly it is rare in cats, but I am beginning to think it is just under diagnosed.  I have seen on a couple of cat facebook groups about people losing their cats to a bleeding in the abdomen.  Of course, if they don't investigate and get the necropsy, then hemangiosarcoma will not be what the vet think it is, because it is so "rare".  Some people are ok with not knowing exactly what happened, but I am thankful we have several resources in the area to get necropsies performed so I can get closure.

What's Happening Wednesday

Well, it has been quite a while since I updated here.  It's time to get caught up on what the Four Crazy Cats have been doing!
Harrison enjoys watching bird tv on the computer while I am at work.  I had to take a meeting on the phone since he was busy.  :)

Trying to catch those birds...

Rusty has a new catnip toy.

We are having a screen-in porch installed at the house.  I know the boys will love it!

The porch will be 10 feet by 16 feet.  We had the inspection yesterday and are now waiting on the concrete to arrive.

Flynn went exploring one evening and found a spider web!

Something interrupted Rusty washing...

Flynn checking out my new beach chair.

We found like 6 house flies in the house one weekend.  Don't know where they all came from, but mighty hunter Rusty to the rescue!

Harrison and Rusty were fascinated by a bird outside Aunties window...it was so close!

I finally had some time to use my new beach chair last weekend at Myrtle Beach.  The weather was perfect, not too warm with a nice breeze.  The water temp was about 84 degrees so it was warm too.  Perfect and a much needed break from work.

Well, there you have it.  We are all doing well still.  Missing Oliver like crazy but trying to stay focused on the good life he had with us, however short.  Quality over quantity right?  Although I'd like both :)

Mancat Monday - RIP Oliver

Oliver Hughes
September 22, 2013 - June 12, 2020

This is one of the hardest posts to write in a long time.  Oliver had to run to the bridge this past Friday.

He went to the vet on Thursday May 28, to have some small bumps on his side looked at.  He was given an antibiotic injection and told to come back in two weeks.  The bumps didn't show any cancer cells, but had bacteria and some inflammation.

During this two weeks, Oliver felt puny on the Friday after that visit, and I figured it was from the antibiotic.  By Saturday, my boy was playing and back to his goofy silly self...see photo above :)

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, until our recheck, he had good days and some off days.  He was always eating though and drinking, just didn't always feel like playing.

Two days before his recheck appointment on Thursday, he started lying around and not wanting to be part of the family much.  I could tell he didn't feel like himself, but again was still eating and drinking.

I took him for his recheck on Thursday, and the vet felt a large mass in his abdomen.  We did x-rays and blood work.  The x-rays confirmed a mass and also fluid in the abdomen.  We needed to wait on the blood results, and he was scheduled for an ultrasound on Tuesday, when the mobile clinic comes.

I took him home and gave some pain meds to help him because he seemed a bit painful.  He rested all afternoon and evening, eating when I took him food and drinking.

Friday morning the vet called and said he was super anemic, that the ultrasound could not wait and to go to the emergency clinic at the vet school immediately.  He would call and send over all the records.  All other blood values was normal.

Off we went and they took Oliver inside, because we still can't go in because of COVID.  They called and confirmed the masses from a preliminary ultrasound, they heard a heart murmur as well.  Testing recommended:

Platelet count
Ultrasound with aspirates
Chest x-rays
Echocardiogram

I accepted all but the Echo because I felt the murmur had to do with the abdominal fluid and not the primary focus at this time.

The vet agreed and since it would take a few hours, I could go home.  I gave the CPR order to try and save him once and if he continued to arrest just let him go.

It was a long afternoon, but at 2:30 they called and said the fluid in the abdomen was blood.  He had masses on his spleen, liver, pancreas and in some lymph nodes.  They were waiting on pathology reports which could take another couple of hours.  They were not able to aspirate the masses because of all the blood in the belly, but they pulled some of it out to test anyway.

5:30 the vet calls back.  There isn't a definitive answer for the type of cancer, but everyone is in agreement that it is cancer.  The vet had spoken to surgery to see if he would be a candidate, and the surgeon said no, there are too many masses in too many locations.  He spoke with the oncology group and they also said chemo was not an option, this is far too aggressive and has already spread to too many places.

My only option was euthanizing him.

I made that decision and asked if I came over would I be able to be with him during the procedure.  He said absolutely, so off Auntie and I went.

The room was set up nicely for us, and I was able to spend a lot of time with Oliver before calling them in for the procedure.  He was high as a kite from all the meds, but enjoyed his snuggles.  It was the hardest thing to press the door bell to have them come back to administer the drugs.  Again though, we were able to spend as much time as needed with him before calling them back to collect him.

I have requested a necropsy, but we are not sure if he will get one.  Again, because of covid things have changed and they aren't doing everyone, just a few a day.  I hope he gets selected because I would like to know what kind of cancer he had.  Options are hemangiosarcoma (which is what Devon had) or carcinomatosis.

I’ve been reflecting today on all the positive things and came up with the following…

  1. Thankful for Covid and the time I’ve had at home to spend with Oliver.  I was able to give him snuggles every time he asked over the last few months.  I will always cherish those times together.
  2. Thankful that the decision to euthanize was completely clear.  It was still a terribly painful decision for me, but it was without a doubt what he needed.  Surgery and chemo were no options for him.  He was bleeding internally and would have gone into cardiac arrest.
  3. I am glad I could be there with him.  He was surrounded by love, and he was at peace.  He wasn’t scared because I was there holding him.  That brings me comfort.
  4. Thankful for friends that can understand the sorrow and that have surrounded me with kindness.  I am blessed.

The other boys have noticed he isn’t at home.  Rusty is extra clingy today, because Oliver acted like his mom at times, always washing his head.  Harrison and Flynn have come for more attention too…I’m not sure if it is for me or them.

One day at a time and we will heal.  I will keep the good thoughts and memories of Oliver in my heart always.

Mancat Monday

It's been a couple of weeks since I last posted, but all is still going well.  We are all healthy and enjoying our time at home!
Auntie was finally given the green light to work from home in March, when the Governor gave the state-wide shelter in place order.  Oliver is helping some...

Cousin George also has a spot near Auntie to keep her in line...

Oliver is enjoying all the extra attention he gets, but sometimes I feel he wonders why I am still around...

We were able to open windows for a while one weekend and it was a big hit.

Flynn is enjoying his walks more, and is actually walking around in the yard some.

Rusty loves finding sun puddles all around the house...

Harrison is coming out more and more.  His personality is really blossoming while we are home.  I am so proud of him and happy that he is much less nervous.

The boys got a ripple rug, just to have something new to play with.  It is a big hit!

Harrison LOVES this toy especially when you move things under the top layer and poke it out the many holes!

Everyone is enjoying the new play mat...

Rusty went on a stroll outside.  He was a bit nervous, so we came back pretty quick, to keep the experience positive for him.

Flynn is a goof...sitting in the stroller to watch the birds outside!  We put the ferns on the porch and the birds are busy building nests.

Well, there you have it...all is well at our house, and we hope it is the same at yours.  Stay safe everyone!
